These Rochester afternoons have been gorgeous. They have aligned themselves perfectly with the Rochester Fringe Festival.
It is easy to get distracted.
In fact, we seemed to know half the crowd Tuesday afternoon at Lila’s, at 101 S. Union St. That’s just a short walk from serial killer Arthur Shawcross’s old apartment at 241 Alexander St. Mostly in the late 1980s, Shawcross murdered a dozen prostitutes…
Uh, sorry. That’s a buzzkill. As stated previously, I am easily distracted.
Lila’s – it’s pronounced Lee-lahs – feels fresh and open, with the doors of this mostly enclosed patio at one with sun and fresh air. This is not an official part of the Fringe Festival, but on days such as this, the fest can be a sum of many city parts.
Duo de Django is in a corner on Lila’s, playing classics such as “My Blue Heaven” and “All of Me,” in the gypsy style of Django Reinhardt. Bobby Henrie and Melanie Moralez each play guitar. Brian Williams is on acoustic bass. Henrie calls this “café, style, perfect for this environment.” Sometimes Henrie will sing a verse, but mostly it’s about the playing.
If you’ve noticed that Duo de Django is actually a trio, good for you, but no one here is counting. Tuesdays is live music at Lila’s; next up is Omega’s 3, another Henrie band variation (he’s best known on the club scene as Bobby Henrie & the Goners).
Most importantly, Tuesdays is $1 oyster day at Lila’s.
Nutrition? Henrie seems a bit ambivalent. Between songs, he’s suggesting that the menu includes “hedgehogs, steamed or fried. It looks like a drowned rat, very tasty.” We’re looking at the excellent menu, and can’t find that particular item. Perhaps it is a chef’s daily special.
A few easy-dancing duos take to the floor in front of the band. Hedgehogs aside, there is a rhythm and elegance to this day.
If you take notice of this setting, it is life at its best. Music, food, wine. Ease. Across the street is a large apartment building, one of the many new ones in this hip neighborhood, its balconies looking down on Lila’s. But the balcony glass doors are all shut tight. No one’s listing to the music there. No one.
I don’t understand.
